In Mongolia, it's bad luck to ask a driver, "How long until we get there?" It's never a measure of time--only a distance to be traveled. There are too many variables in Mongolia: wayward livestock linger roadside; potholes rival patches of smooth pavement; road hazards abound. It's always about the journey as much as it is the destination. The vast and varied landscapes seem never-ending. It's an endless dreamscape that nomadic families inhabit in a wondrous and fleeting existence. For a week in May 2017, I traveled an uncertain road leading to a certain kind of unique beauty in central Mongolia.
